Homework Assignments: 1. Revisit all class notes. 2. Read and highlight the textbook Chapter 9 “Communicating in a Group Discussion” on pages 121-130. Pay careful attention to the twenty roles people play in group discussions. I realize learning twenty roles may seem daunting, however, it’s important to learn the group roles because once you’re able to recognize the group roles people are playing, you’ll understand what roles need to be played to help your group succeed and you’ll become a major asset to any group in which you are a member. 3. Complete Final Exam Crossword Puzzle #2 on page 133. The clues are on pages 136 & 137.This crossword puzzle covers the group discussion chapter. It should be a good warm up to quiz #9. 4. Take You Ought to Know by Now sample review quiz #9 5. Look over the Group Discussion Project Survey Results on the link below. Our first job is to look over the data to find any problems associated with the Speech 101 Internet course. What trends do you see? Are multiple people citing the same problems? 6. Read and highlight the Group Discussion Project assignment sheet on pages 152-153. Email any questions you have to me. Graded Homework

Links to Additional Materials: The results of the Group Discussion Project Survey Results will be available at this link within a day or two. Look over the survey results for patterns. What responses are given several times by different people? The George Mason University website has some excellent material about participating in successful group discussions. I can take you to the George Mason University Resources and Links page. (It’s three clicks in.) From there on you’ll have to make two more clicks. First, click on the Leadership Tips link. This will take you to a page with 26 more links. There are several excellent links. The links I think you would find helpful for the Group Discussion Project are Problem Solving, Rules for Brainstorming, and Characteristics of Effective Team Member. Study Break: The Meetings, meetings, meetings link gives some the clever comments people have made over the years concerning having too many meetings. Richard Brinsley Sheridan was an early 19th century British theatre manager, playwright and member of the House of Commons. In his play The Rivals, Sheridan created the character of Mrs. Malaprop, a woman who misused big words. The word “malaprop”, used to describe a misused word, came into the English language as a result. Richard Brinsley Sheridan and real-life word play relates two stories of Sheridan playing with words in Parliament. |
