Study Guide for Test #1

In-Class Exam-80 points (This portion of the test will be completed in 105D The Writing Math Lab.)

General Purposes: You should be able to define, recognize and write examples of each General Purpose.

Specific Purposes: You should know the definition of a Specific Purpose, the three things a good Specific Purpose should be and be able to write Specific Purposes for each General Purpose.

Thesis Statements: You should know the definition of a Thesis Statement. You should be able to write a Thesis Statement for each General Purpose.

Main Point Organizational Patterns: You should know the definitions of the seven main point organizational patterns and be able to recognize each pattern. You should be able to write main points for each organizational pattern when you are given a topic.

Outlining: You should know the four outlining rules. You should know the name of each outline point.

Delivery: You should know the definitions and uses for all four delivery styles. You should know the four steps of Extemporaneous Delivery in the order they occur. You should know the definitions of each verbal and nonverbal delivery element. You should know the definition of ethos.

Introductions: You should know the definitions of the six attention-getting devices and the five introduction devices designed to prepare the audience for the speech body. You should be able to recognize and write an example of every device. You should know when the audience preparation devices should be used as well as when certain attention-getting devices should be used. You should know the definitions of friendly, neutral and hostile audiences.

Conclusions: You should be able to define, recognize and write examples of challenge and summary conclusions.

Evidence: You should know the seven evidence presentation methods. You should be able to define, recognize and write an example of each method.

Take Home Test-20 points (Turn the take-home test in at the Writing/Math Lab when you come on campus to take the in-class portion of Test #1.)

Speech Manuscript: You should be able to turn a speech manuscript into an outline. You should be able to recognize a Thesis Statement in a speech manuscript. You should be able to recognize an organizational pattern in a speech manuscript. You should be able to write a Specific Purpose for a speech manuscript. You should be able to recognize and apply introduction, conclusion and evidence devices to a speech manuscript.
