Specific
Purpose: To inform the audience how to begin writing a speech
Thesis Statement: I'm going to explain how to begin writing
a speech.
I. First,
select one of three general purposes for speeches.
A. Persuasive
speeches
1. Use
subjective facts and
2. Convince the audience to change their opinions.
B. Informative
speeches
1. Educate
the audience and
2. Use objective facts.
C. Entertainment
speeches amuse the audience.
II. Next,
choose a topic.
A. Always
choose a topic you find interesting.
B. Choose your topic quickly.
C. If you have difficulty choosing a topic
1. Look
in recent publications
a.
Like magazines
b. Or newspapers,
2. Or
reference books such as the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature.

The Reader's Guide shows you an extensive listing
of topics
b. And lets you see how much research is available on each
topic.
D. Lastly,
you should narrow your chosen topic.
III. Thirdly,
write a specific purpose.
A. Your
specific purpose should have one major idea,
B. Be to the point
C. And be worded in terms of the audience.
IV. Finally,
write your thesis statement.
A. The
thesis statement is usually the first sentence in the speech
body.
B. It is always a complete sentence
C. And is the most general statement in the speech.

Exercise subsection "b"
Specific
Purpose: To persuade the audience to take steps to reduce illiteracy
Thesis Statement: Our public school system must take steps
to reduce illiteracy.
I. A substantial
number of people in this country face a bleak future because they
are functionally illiterate.
A. These
people who have never learned to read properly traditionally
have trouble finding jobs.
1. First
of all, their lack of language skills severely limits the
kind of work they can do.
2. Secondly, a functionally illiterate person may have trouble
filling out job applications.
B. Since
these people have limited vocabularies it is also difficult
for them to communicate effectively with other individuals in
society.
Thesis Statement:
Our public school system must take steps to reduce illiteracy.
II. Several
steps could be taken at the high school level.
A. All
students could be required to attend four years of high school.
B. The additional class time could be used to place extra emphasis
on reading skills such as
1. Vocabulary,
2. Comprehension
3. And speed reading.
C. The
ability to read at the high school level could become a requirement
for graduation.
III. There
would be many advantages to this plan.
A. State
aid to individual school districts would be increased due to
the larger enrollment caused by the mandatory four-year attendance
plan.
B. Students who read well are better equipped to deal with society.
