Preparing the Delivery Copy of Your Speech

  • Use 8-1/2" x 11" paper if you have a lectern.

The lectern holds your speech notes. Many people incorrectly refer to a lectern as a podium, but a podium is a raised platform. You stand on top of a podium. You put your speech notes on top of a lectern.

I don't like using 3" x 5" cards for speech notes. Think about it. Have you ever seen a professional speaker use 3" x 5" cards? for me, 3" x 5" cards just mean you can't get as much on a card and have to keep changing cards.
  • Create a "live pile" and a "dead pile" on top of the lectern.

Your live pile holds the speech notes you're currently using or are about to use. The dead pile is for the speech notes you've already used. You never look at your dead pile. A little before you finish a page, slide the page from your live pile to your dead pile.
